Travelling for work and constantly being on the road is exciting, and it also makes me appreciate life when I’m back home. There are so many things about Australia that inspire me. How lucky we are to have the great outdoors, incredible produce, and innovative brands (amongst a million other things). The health game is strong here, and it’s awesome to see so many new companies investing in wellbeing and quality ingredients.
One of my recent discoveries is Yousli – an online muesli whole foods store that’s “big on health but never compromises taste”. When I went online to made my own blend I was blown away by the ingredients available, my usual superfood favourites such as cacao nibs were in the mix – but there were even activated almonds and some dried berries that I’ve never heard of!
Essentially you pick a base (classic oats to gluten free options such as puffed quinoa & amaranth). Then you can add more grains and nuts (pistachios, macadamias, chia seeds and activated buckinis!!! to name a few). Last but certainly not least is the dried fruit. Crimson raisins, inca berries, coconut flakes, barberries… mmmm… need I say more. As I added the ingredients it updated the nutritional calculator that pops up on the side of the page! So cool!
Honestly, I had quite a difficult time making my own blend because I wanted to put EVERYTHING in! You can, however, leave it up to the experts and opt for the pre made blends (I tried Gluten Freedom & Activated Almond Bircher which were both divine). OH and if their packaging wasn’t cute enough – Yousli also deliver Australia wide and by bicycle in Melbourne (weather permitting)! Such a great idea!
Anyway all of this had me thinking – muesli is not just about breakfast. There are so many fun ways to incorporate it into our meals, and I thought I’d share some of the ways I use them with you…
1. The classic muesli
There’s nothing wrong with a good bowl of muesli with a splash of milk or yoghurt. I always include fresh fruit in my breakfast bowl!
2. On top of a smoothie
If you follow my instagram feed you’ll know that this is my favourite way to eat my muesli! Most mornings I try to make a smoothie and I like to serve it in a bowl – topped with extra fruit and/or some grains.
3. Make overnight oats or bircher muesli
When I have a busy morning ahead of me, I’ll prepare some overnight oats. All you do is soak your muesli in milk or juice (I’m currently using half fresh apple juice & half coconut milk) overnight. The Yousli Activated Almond Bircher blend uses steel cut oats, so the muesli is textured!
4.Mix it in with your salad
I love a bit of extra crunch and texture in a salad, and I find that puffed grains (such as amaranth or quinoa) are a perfect salad topping! Great replacement (or addition!) to seeds and nuts.
5. Eat them with pancakes
Because everyone needs to fix their sweet tooth from time to time! Rather going for some heavy cream or butter, try topping your pancakes with some fresh fruit and grains, with a dash of good quality maple syrup or honey.
How do you like to eat your muesli?
