Welcome to the newest section of my blog! My friends often ask me where I source my ingredients, and I’ve been thinking for a while that it would be great to feature some of my favourite brands here.
So to kick things off I want to introduce you to Take Root, a Filipino natural snack company run by two friends. Monica and Aileen were living in New York when they discovered healthy living, and realised that food could be healing, nutritious, and delicious all at the same time. Their mantra: organic whenever possible, straightforward ingredients you can actually pronounce, and flavors that are 100% delightful. I like that.
Whilst I love cooking and prepare most of my meals at home, the one thing I struggle with – particularly in Manila – is the lack of choice when it comes to purchasing healthy snacks. Sometimes my schedule is impossible with loooong shoots and I simply don’t have the energy or time to make food to take to all my jobs. You can imagine how excited I was when I discovered Take Root at their little stall at Salcedo Market.
They’re known for their vegan kale chips, which are made over a 12 hour process; each leaf is carefully picked, washed, massaged (!), and then dried to a crisp. Talk about effort! My personal favourites are the bliss balls, which come in dark chocolate brownie or home made peanut butter flavours. Don’t let the name or taste deceive you. They taste so naughty but are made from simple ingredients such as coconut flour, dates & coconut nectar, and are wheat, dairy, grain and refined sugar free. Perfect snack size too! Take Root also sell granola (Burnt Honey Almond with Berries, Banana Bread with Flaxseed), and their Cashew cookie Power Bars.
Ingredients are sourced locally, supporting farmers in Silang, Cavite and Orani, & Bataan. To get your hands on these snacks you can go to one of the many pick up locations in Metro Manila, or order on their website. It’s so exciting to find a Filipino company using simple ingredients to make nourishing & delicious snacks!
Let the good habits take root.
